The UEFA Women’s Champions League league phase opened with plenty of late drama on Tuesday night. Manchester City produced the standout result, coming from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 at Bayern Munich on their return to the competition.
Bayern started strongly. Giulia Gwinn scored in the 11th minute and an own goal from Kerstin Casparij made it 2-0 after 28 minutes. City responded just before half-time through Beth Mead. The equaliser arrived in the 86th minute when new signing Carlotta Wamser finished from inside the box for her first Champions League goal.
Elsewhere, Arsenal needed a stoppage-time penalty from Mariona Caldentey to beat HB Køge 1-0. Inter Milan marked their debut in the competition proper with a 1-0 win over Häcken, while Benfica caused a surprise by winning 2-1 at Juventus. Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain shared the points in a 1-1 draw.
The remaining Matchday 1 fixtures take place tonight, with Barcelona hosting Paris FC and Chelsea facing Austria Wien.
